Proofreading and editing

In brief, proofreading is the reviewing of a translated text by an editor to ensure that it makes sense and that there are no basic errors. Editing, on the other hand, involves comparing the translated text sentence-by-sentence against the original and making any changes, which naturally takes longer but produces a more fluid translation.

There are two types of editing:
1. Content editing checks that the ideas in the original have been translated correctly, that nothing has been overlooked, that the sentences are logical and that the use of terminology is consistent.
2. Professional editing checks that the terms used in the translated text are correct and appropriate in terms of the intended use of the translation. This is carried out by a specialist editor or another translator.

Orders can be placed for two types of editing:
- editing of text you have drafted yourself (charged per word); or
- editing of text you have drafted yourself plus check for accuracy against the original (charged by the hour).

One service that is being sought more and more in combination with editing is localisation, which is the significant adaptation of a translated text taking into account the linguistic and cultural environment of the end users.
